The role and position of nursing staff in the hospital must be properly assessed

On June 24th, at the National Hospital of Endocrinology, the Ministry of Health, Department of Management Medical Examination held the Chief Nursing Conference in the North. Again, the topic of the role and position of nursing staff in patient care was provided by the participants.

Speaking at the meeting, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Viet Tien, Deputy Minister of Health, said that nursing and midwifery in the past years have gained important achievements in the fields of: Administration, management, training, practice and scientific research. The quality of care for patients has improved markedly through the innovation of care delivery models, comprehensive patient care organization, standardization of nursing techniques. As the caregivers and the patient’s most patient and most technically skilled, the behaviors and attitudes of nurses greatly influence the feelings and satisfaction of the patient.

However, according to Vice Minister Tien, many doctors have not properly evaluated the role of nurses, have not promoted the role and position of nurses in caring for patients. In caring and communicating with patients, many nurses also have an attitude that does not properly affect the satisfaction of patients.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue, Director of Health Care Management Department, said that nursing and midwifery staffs are lacking in numbers and professional qualifications. Health staff data from 1256 hospitals in 2014 show that there are 61,251 doctors working in the country, 117,748 nurses and midwives working in health care facilities. The ratio of nurses, midwives / doctors is 1.9.

Nursing and midwifery are both short-lived and have to be stretched out to do administrative work, insurance payments … leading to difficulties in fully implementing the steps of the technical process of care as well as delivery. Next, educate health educators to establish close nurse-patient relationships. The lack of nursing personnel greatly affects the quality of care and safety of patients in health care facilities and health care providers.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue, nursing is a hard job, if the status of nursing careers are not paid due attention, occupations less promoted will affect the passion, professional pride and Consequently, patients are not entitled to the best nursing care. If the hospital leader does not care, nursing will face many difficulties. In fact, at the conference, there was also a lack of presence of leaders from the Department of Health and the leaders of the hospitals.
In addition, the nursing management system has not been completed at 21 Department of Health, many nurses departmental intermediate level, have not been trained to improve professional qualifications and management. In hospitals, there is no nursing model demonstrating the active role of nurses.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue, in order to improve the quality of care and ensure the safety of patients, nurses must renew their awareness of the status and value of nursing; Improved patient-centered care model. Strengthen the coordination and promotion of the proactive, active and professional role of nurses and midwives in the process of caring for patients, especially and to improve the service attitude and quality of service. Care for the satisfaction of the patient …
